The Borås Triathlon offers various distances including a full Ironman (introduced in 2021), a half-Ironman, and a sprint triathlon. The full Ironman distance doubles as the National Long Distance Triathlon Championships in Sweden.
The event caters to different levels of athletes with categories for various age groups and a division for beginners. The full Ironman distance offers prize money for top finishers and awards for age-group winners, while the half-Ironman distance awards are limited to the overall race category winners. The sprint triathlon includes an open category for both males and females, but does not offer awards.
The triathlon takes place at Almenäs, conveniently located a short distance from Borås city center. This area boasts ample parking, a cafeteria, and public restrooms.
The full Ironman starts at 07.30, the half-Ironman at 09.00, and the sprint triathlon on Friday at 17.15.
Swimming takes place in the clean, fresh waters of Öresjö, typically around 15-18 degrees Celsius at this time of year. The event adheres to the Swedish Triathlon Federation’s regulations regarding wetsuits and water temperature.
Ironman participants complete two swim laps with a short land run in between, while the half-Ironman involves one lap on the same course. The swim segment is well-monitored for safety, with a beach start and a recommended self-seeding system. The sprint course involves a shorter, one-lap swim.
The bike segment for the Ironman is a two-lap, out-and-back course, with the half-Ironman covering one lap. The course is undulating, spanning open roads with about 1000 meters of ascent per lap, well-marked and supervised. There are two aid stations per lap, at approximately 30 and 60 kilometers, plus an extra one at the 90-kilometer turnaround for the Ironman distance. The sprint triathlon follows a different, flatter course without aid stations. Drafting is prohibited and helmets are mandatory.
The run course is flat and fast, split between pavement and gravel, ideal for spectators. The Ironman includes six seven-kilometer laps, the half-Ironman three, and the sprint a single five-kilometer lap, with multiple aid stations per lap.
Additionally, a swimrun event takes place on Sunday at the same location. More details can be found on the Borås Swimrun page.
Borås is easily accessible, with Landvetter International Airport just 25 minutes away, offering bus and taxi services to the city.
